Celebrating Heritage: The Castle Tour at Lake Corpus Christi

Mathis, TX – On a bright and beautiful morning in October, the Mathis Economic Development Corporation (Mathis EDC) partnered with Lake Corpus Christi State Park to host a historical and cultural event that celebrated the rich heritage of the area. The Castle Tour, held during Hispanic Heritage Month, was more than just a walk through the park—it was a journey back in time to honor the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and its Hispanic enrollees.

The event took place at the Old CCC Pavilion, affectionately known as ‘The Castle’ by locals, and provided attendees with a unique opportunity to explore one of Mathis’s historical treasures. “It’s essential to recognize the contributions of the CCC and the impact of Hispanic workers who were integral to the development of our State Park,” said Amber Hullum, a park ranger who led the tour.

Participants gathered at The Castle, where they were greeted by park rangers ready to share stories of the past. The tour began with a brief talk about the Civilian Conservation Corps’ role in shaping the infrastructure and recreational facilities at Lake Corpus Christi.

“The Mathis EDC is proud to support events like the Castle Tour that highlight our community’s dedication to preserving history while fostering educational and cultural enrichment,” remarked a Mathis EDC spokesperson. “By investing in and promoting these events, we aim to enhance the quality of life for our residents and attract visitors to our beautiful town.”

The Castle Tour was not only educational but also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving the stories and contributions of those who came before us. The Mathis EDC’s involvement in events like this underscores their commitment to community engagement and economic development through tourism and cultural appreciation.

As participants walked the grounds, they learned about the architecture, construction, and historical context of the pavilion. The event was insightful and tailored to an adult audience, providing a deep dive into the park’s history.

With the lake as a backdrop, the Castle Tour was a testament to Mathis’s vibrant history and the ongoing efforts to preserve and promote its cultural landmarks. It also highlighted the Mathis EDC’s role in driving forward the community’s economic and cultural initiatives.

“The Mathis EDC is dedicated to creating opportunities that showcase our town’s unique character and invite investment and growth,” the spokesperson added. “We believe that by honoring our past, we pave the way for a prosperous future.”

The Mathis EDC invites the community and visitors to stay engaged with upcoming events and to explore all that Mathis has to offer. From our picturesque landscapes to our historic sites and warm community spirit, Mathis is a place where history and opportunity meet.
